Funny how little people know about Porsche. The company has their own design studio amongst other things and you cannot simply buy the permission to use their name and/or logo (unlike say Ferrari) but you have to let Porsche do the industrial design. There're actually plenty of Porsche Design phones out there, most of them in cooperation with Blackberry, though.

I had an electric kettle from Porche Design, it was very fast.
  • mohammad Saif - Wednesday, November 8, 2017 - link

Newly i bought that phone its awesome
  • WinterCharm - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

There's even Porsche Design hard drives.
  • FrozenGiraffe - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

    1359 Euro == $1500
  • xype - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

Euro prices usually have VAT included, compared to US prices. So $1300 sounds about right.
  • V900 - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

That doesnt really make sense, since VAT in Europe is anywhere from 0 to 25%

So "Euro prices usually have VAT included" can mean that the phone costs anywhere from 1359€ to 1698€...
  • V900 - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

Whoops, anywhere from 1087€ to 1359€ obviously!
  • digiguy - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

where on earth VAT is 0? Here in Switzerland VAT is 8% and it's the lowest in the World with Japan. In Europe it's rather 15 to 25%
  • Meteor2 - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

Possibly in the US? I think over there VAT is 'sales tax' levied by states. Could be wrong though.
  • Meteor2 - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

Oh you meant where in Europe. Quite...
  • Murloc - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

yeah the idiom "where on earth" can be pretty ambiguous in this context XD
  • V900 - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

Monaco... I think it's also 0 in Andorra, Liechtenstein, San Marino and the other little mini-countries.
  • TesseractOrion - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

Also oil-rich Gulf states have no VAT AFAIK. Malaysia only introduced one last year, leading to protests over its excessive 6% (!) impact LOL...
  • WithoutWeakness - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

The giant PORSCHE DESIGN across the top is ugly as hell. Manufacturers need to stop putting branding on the front of their phones. Looks horrible.

Other than that it looks like an HTC A9 which was already an iPhone 6 clone so I don't know why Huawei wasted their money paying Porsche to design a 2-year old phone. I actually like Huawei's industrial design on most of their phones. Shame.
  • frenchy_2001 - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

Actually, with dual curved screen and front and back curves, this looks much closer to the Note 7.
Also, just wondering if they are reusing the Note 7 screen, provided the model was removed from the market, but Samsung had big plans for it. Sounds too short for that though...
  • Peskarik - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

How otherwise you would know that this is Porsche design and charge 1300 for bill of goods worth 100 bucks? This is phone for brand-crazy Asians and poor people from other parts of globe (only poor try to show off with an electronic appliance).
  • jospoortvliet - Saturday, November 5, 2016 - link

It looks a lot like my HTC One (m7) which apple copied with the iPhone 6 so that would even make it a 3 year old design ;-)
  • Rocket321 - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

    OMG that horrendous P O R S C H E D E S I G N splattered at the top of the display had better be one of those peel off stickers!
  • Amandtec - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

You have obviously never tried to pick up chicks in a bar before.
  • SquarePeg - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

Yes, exactly right. If you're the kind of person paying this much money for a Porsche designed phone you want everyone to know it. Much like Apple putting a large cutout corporate logo on the back of all their phones.
  • Peskarik - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

You try to show off with your phone only if you are actually a poor nobody.
  • Michael Bay - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

    So much pain.
  • Peskarik - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

You mean one can pick up chicks flashing a phone? Doubt it works. Not sure it works even flushing a Porsche car, at least not in cities like London, NY, Zurich. Haven't tried though.
  • mohammad Saif - Wednesday, November 8, 2017 - link

Hey Amandtec i never try chicks in abar before
  • Duzzi - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

    Perfect but that price.....
  • etamin - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

Going from a Xiaomi Mi2 to a Huawei P8, I felt that EMUI was a poor ripoff of MIUI (which, some may call a ripoff of iOS). Aside from the hideous branding on the front of recent models, I do like Huawei's designs, it's just a shame that EMUI is so far behind in refinement.
  • Meteor2 - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

    Hopefully that's now changed.
  • V900 - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

It sure didn't take Porsche Design very long to mourn the loss of their former cellphone partner Blackberry!
  • eSyr - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

Why you keep calling 2.5K display "2K"? There always was "QHD" term for displays with these dimensions.
  • Meteor2 - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

QHD didn't catch on. It's not like 4K has 4,000 pixels in any dimension, either. People know what both means though.

I don't quite see the point in 2K though; no content is produced in that form, and you can't see the pixels on a 1080p phone used at the normal distance. It's not really enough when used in a VR headset either.
  • lilmoe - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

"It's not like 4K has 4,000 pixels in any dimension"

    Sure it does.
    4K (DCI) = 4096x2160
    UHD (what you're thinking) = 3840x2160
  • lilmoe - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

    2K (DCI) = 2048x1080
    FHD = 1920x1080

Cinema DCI is wider than consumer screens.
  • ikjadoon - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

Back in the day, we had HD (1280x720) and FHD (1920x1080). And nobody disagreed.
  • TheFlyingSquirrel - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

It was so much easier when everyone just said wrote out the resolution. Then all the marketing departments for phones decided to start using those acronyms and TV's followed so now for the past like 3 years there's always some mini arguments in the comments over what the acronyms really even represent.
  • Meteor2 - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

Porsche Design and Porsche the car company aren't really related; the former was founded by a member of the Porsche family after he worked for the car company, and both are owned by the Porsche family's holding company, but that's about it. They've not done work for each other or shared employees.
  • Daniel Egger - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

You're wrong. F. A. Porsche is a grandson of Ferdinand Porsche who founded Porsche company and designed the 911. In the beginning Porsche Design only designed interior and accessories for Porsche cars but over time Porsche Design became more and more important for the cars as well so they were integrated into the main company.

There're are actually many services you can acquire from Porsches subsidiaries nowadays apart from "just" cars: design, engineering, financial, business consulting and even the most competitors in the car business are happy customers...
  • lilmoe - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

I don't blame them for copying the GN7 design. That thing looks nice. Sammy has presented that design on a golden platter for all OEMs to copy after their failure...
  • SpetsnazAntiVIP - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

No fingerprint sensor? What year is it again?
  • warisz00r - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

    It's there, at the front
  • asfletch - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

The subtle 'pd' logo on the back is nice; why'd they have to spoil it with the shouty front one? Reminds of Porsche Design status symbols yuppies used to brandish in the 90s (sunglasses etc).
Now more impressed that ZTE didn't splash "BMW DESIGNWORKS" all over the Axon 7.
  • azrael- - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

Much more sensible phone than the regular Mate 9 ...until you see the price. I think even Apple afficionados might choke on that one.
  • Lolimaster - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

Where can I find Porsche designed waifus?

    I want Mikumo.
  • Klug4Pres - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

I feel this is one of those products for which we should keep a global purchase register.

If anyone actually buys one, that person would be referred to a research institute for rare diseases of the brain.
  • Gunbuster - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

For perspective this is 50 times what you can get a smartphone for. Tech suckers are even better than the ultra wealthy, It's like buying a $185K Porsche 911R for $641K
  • fanofanand - Friday, November 4, 2016 - link

$1300?????? My oh my I needed a good laugh this morning, thank you Anandtech, thank you Huawei!
  • Ethos Evoss - Sunday, November 13, 2016 - link
